Get Out of The House: Making Pornography Use Impossible
Making pornography use impossible will be a key part of your strategy to quit.
Evaluating your options
In a previous blog post, I talk about making the choice to stop using pornography. Like any choice, people tend to make better choices when they evaluate the options and clearly, choose one or the other. This process of evaluation can help you get a clear idea why you’ve chosen the option you went with.
Starting to take action
Once you make the choice, then you need to start taking action. One of the very earliest strategies you can adopt is to put yourself in a position where you are not able to use pornography.
Willpower won’t help much
I particularly recommend this approach because, in the early days, many men don’t feel like they have the ability to stop using pornography using willpower alone. That’s fair enough; willpower is a pretty limited resource, and your progress will be more effective if you can bring to bear all of your resources.
Making pornography use impossible
To put yourself in a position where you are not able to use pornography can often mean getting out of the house and taking yourself to a public place. In this public place, make sure it’s one where you can’t actually use pornography. You could take yourself to a café, shopping centre, or even walk through your neighbourhood.
What’s important is that you put yourself in a public place where you can’t use pornography. You might not need to spend all that long doing this activity. What you may not realise is that your desire to use pornography quite quickly fades away once you don’t do anything about it. If that happens, you can go home. Making pornography use impossible is going to help a lot.
Keeping to your agreement
However, along with this is the understanding that if you have a desire to use pornography again, you need to get yourself out of the house again. This must be an agreement that you make with yourself before you feel the desire to use pornography. To wait to make the decision until you actually feel the desire is to invite failure.
If you’re struggling with this, I offer individual counselling and couples counselling regarding pornography use in Richmond in Sunbury.
